Cave of Forgotten Dreams was probably my second-favorite documentary of this year, and Werner Herzog looks to be pulling out another massive winner with Into the Abyss, a look at death row inmates, their families, the families of their victims, and the men that ultimately put them to death. It makes me wonder why Herzog hasn’t done a death row documentary before. It’s the perfect place for his sensibilities as a documentarian. A complex narrative with no easy choices or answers. A cast of men and women so utterly unique to the situation at hand. The chance to shine a light on human subjects in an overwhelmingly oppressive atmosphere.
Into the Abyss comes out November 11th, and I can’t wait to check it out.
