Like most of you nerds, I was pretty into anime in high school, but I never picked up Rurouni Kenshin. Maybe it’s the samurai angle; I was never really into action-oriented shows. It was certainly always popular, though, and now it’s getting its own live-action adaptation. Rurouni Kenshin follows Himura Kenshin, a former assassin who now wanders the country protecting people as atonement for all his previous murders. You know, just the sort of story that could feasibly go on forever.
This looks like it has all the over-the-top action of a previously animated samurai show combined with the sort of acting one would expect from an adapted anime. Have you ever seen one of those? The actors make the same kinds of gestures and speak in the same affected manner as in the cartoon, and the result is endearingly cheesy. I’m not sure how it will hold up in terms of accuracy, though. Any fans of the series out there? What do you think?
