Trailer: The Awakening

So, this seems kind of like a cross between 1408 and The Orphanage. Skeptical ghost-hunting woman in search of a reason to believe, creepy boarding school-type haunted house, eerie, early 20th century London atmosphere… That’s not a bad combination for a horror-thriller to have. I only worry that it will have a predictable “one-of-us”-type ending and obligatory jump-out scenes that are meant to frighten you, but just end up making you need to pee. I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, though, as it has that woman from that one movie, The Prestige (Rebecca Hall; a face, not a name).

Here’s the synopsis:

Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence Cathcart is on a mission to expose all séances as exploitative shams. However, when she is called to a boys’ boarding school to investigate a case of the uncanny, she is gradually forced to confront her skepticism in the most terrifying way, shaking her scientific convictions and her sense of self to the very core. Haunting and moving in equal measure, The Awakening is a sophisticated psychological/supernatural thriller in the tradition of The Others and The Orphanage, but with its own unique and thrilling twist.
