Artist Marjane Satrapi has two excellent films under her belt: Persepolis and Chicken with Plums, both of which were co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud. With The Gang of Jotas (La Bande de Jotas), Satrapi’s flying solo as a writer and director, and she’s not even adapting one of her graphic novels. The result is something I wouldn’t have expected out of her: an absurdist crime comedy that looks like something straight out of the Coen Brothers’s wheelhouse.
Here’s a brief synopsis for The Gang of Jotas:
A luggage mix-up at the airport brings together the lives of two friends preparing for a badminton tournament with a woman on the run from a gang who killed her sister.
Satrapi stars in the film alongside Mattias Ripa (her husband), Ali Mafakheri, Maria de Medeiros, and Stéphane Roche. The Gang of Jotas comes out in France on February 6th. No word on international release dates. The film’s French poster is in the gallery.
