Hey guys, it’s October! You know what that means: Halloween is right around the corner! As such, we will be bringing you some of our favorite horror film suggestions, in the hopes that they will lead to some sleepless nights. This is…Trick or Treat!
One of my favorite horror genre staples is the haunted asylum/hospital/post office. The House on Haunted Hill remake is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and honestly, Grave Encounters is right up there with it. I first saw this movie for the Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago and it really impressed me.
The film, presented in found footage style, details the final (for obvious reasons) episode of Grave Encounters, a paranormal investigation show hosted by charismatic douche bag Lance Preston. He and his crew go to investigate the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital and discover that maybe they chose the wrong field of reality television to work in.
Grave Encounters is a really fun scary movie. It takes the tropes of the aforementioned haunted asylum and presents them through the medium of found footage to great effect. Better yet, it’s on the fall-less populous side of the found footage fence with the scant few other films that don’t leave you disappointed with the end! Grave Encounters is genuinely creepy, and along with tomorrow’s Trick or Treat installment, one of my all-time favorites that I have seen as part of the Flixist staff. It even spawned an admittedly less-than-stellar sequel, if you’re into that kind of thing.
