It has been a rough road for Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology crime series, but HBO was finally ready to show off a bit of the third season of True Detective, which has been long in the works. Starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, the once-universally acclaimed show is looking back to reclaim its glory.
Much like the first two seasons of the series, the teaser is full of angst and intrigue against the background of beautiful, yet dark and gothic environments. Few specifics about the season’s plot were evident, but it will take place over the course of more than one time period, with Ali’s character being shown in different ages. The season will also star Ray Fisher, Scoot McNairy, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, and Mamie Gummer.
While I’m a bit of an apologist when it comes to season two of True Detective, I recognize that it didn’t make nearly as big a splash as the first season, which starred the iconic duo ofMatthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. We’ll see where True Detective season three will rank when it begins airing on HBO starting January 2019.
