I am both very excited and exceptionally bored with The Iron Lady. On the one hand, it’s Meryl Streep in a character study, which means the film will be carried on the strength of her performance. So it’s going to be worthwile. It’s Meryl Goddamned Streep. Excellence is a given. Also, she’s playing arguably the most reviled figure in British government since Neville Chamberlain. That’s a gold mine on top of a diamond mine for one of the greatest actresses working today.
On the other hand, the only way this could be more blatant Oscar bait is if this version of Margaret Thatchet was functionally handicapped in some way. We’ve got a sweeping biopic, and an English one to boot. I always want Ms. Streep to win an Oscar in any given year, but this is just trying too hard. No matter what, I’m gonna see this, but I reserve my right to remain steadfastly-cynical.
