F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton, a biopic of NWA, could finally wind up at Universal. The project has been in the works since 2009 and is currently with New Line, though a source with The Wrap says that negotiations between the studios are underway. Gray should still be set to start production next spring. Ice Cube is one of the producers on the film.
Straight Outta Compton would chronicle the rise and break-up of NWA, including the death of Easy-E from AIDS. I’m interested to check out the whole arc of the group’s career, but, I’m not going to lie, I’m really curious how they’ll handle all the feuding and royalty disputes. The clash between Ice Cube and the four other guys in NWA and the later clash between Dr. Dre and Easy led to some absolutely epic diss tracks. It was E’s death that finally ended all the animosity.
As of press time, I’m not sure if Ice Cube still hasn’t had dinner with the President. (Common has, though, and he laid a pretty sick diss on Cube and Westside Connection back in the mid-90’s.)
