Next month, Watch_Dogs will release on all gaming consoles (with a Wii U version coming this fall) and PC. The story follows Aiden Pearce, a skilled hacker who taps into the city’s network to do pretty much whatever he wants.
Ubisoft believes in the strength of the franchise — so much so, in fact, that they’re already planning to make a film, along with films based on the Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell franchises.
Today, they revealed the writers: Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The duo have previously teamed up for Zombieland and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. They’re also on board for Zombieland 2 and Deadpool.
I think the reason that Reese and Wernick did such a great job with Zombieland is due to the creative freedom that they had with the material. With a film like Zombieland, there’s a lot of room for humor. Even with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, there’s a bit of space where humor can be injected. With Watch_Dogs, however, that opportunity isn’t really there — it’s a dark, serious tale about how everything is connected and there’s really no such thing as privacy anymore.
I don’t necessarily think that they chose the wrong writers, but I do wonder how the tone of the final product will be. One thing’s for sure: if it sticks close to the game, it’s going to be a thrillride.
