Remember Tenet? Back when the Coronavirus pandemic began in March (has it really been over four months?), the entertainment industry has been touting Christopher Nolan’s Tenet as being the herald of cinemas reopening around the globe. Warner Bros. was adamant that the movie will release in theaters and it was originally on track to release last Friday, July 17th, though that day was delayed repeatedly in two-week increments. It looks like Warner Bros. has just given up on solidifying a release date for the movie for the foreseeable future as it will no longer release on August 14th.
While Warner Bros. has stated that they are hoping to release the movie in 2020, especially given how Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune are still keeping their 2020 release dates, it’s likely that Tenet may release in certain markets before others. Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich stated that they “are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.” Since Europe is in a much better position in counteracting the Coronavirus than America is, it’s conceivable that the movie will have a staggered global release, releasing there before coming to the States.
Given confirmed cases rising in the United States at an alarming rate, with only two states on track to potentially contain the spread of the virus, this is clearly no time to be opening up movie theaters. A huge spike in cases from the South and West has caused a rollback for numerous states that reopened too soon, putting a damper on any theater trying to get butts into seats in the near future. For now, you’ll just have to be content watching movies and TV shows from the safety and comfort of your own homes while all of this continues to get sorted out as my faith in humanity slowly but steadily declines.
Tenet has no set release date, but WB says they will announce one “imminently.”
