It’s been nearly a decade since I watched The Host. It was my first Bong Joon-Ho film, and I was hooked. Anything he makes, I’ll give it a watch, whether it’s something like 2003’s Memories of Murder or as ambitiously off the rails as 2013’s Snowpiercer.
Bong is back with a new movie, which will debut on Netflix on June 28th. It’s called Okja, and it’s one of Flixist’s most anticipated movies of 2017.
A teaser trailer for Okja just dropped, and you can watch it below.
It’s a brief look at the film, but I’m getting the vibe of an 1980s creature adventure, a la ET, Flight of the Navigator, or Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. (No one remembers Baby, huh? Just me?)
Maybe I’m just reading my own childhood interests into this adventure movie.
Here’s an official synopsis:
From visionary Director Bong Joon Ho, this grand global adventure follows a friendship too big to ignore. Meet Mija, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja. Following her across continents, the coming-of-age comedy drama sees Mija’s horizons expand in a way one never would want for one’s children, coming up against the harsh realities of genetically modified food experimentation, globalization, eco-terrorism, and humanity’s obsession with image, brand and self-promotion.
Sounds like there’s a bit of Free Willy in this movie, too. I’m down. Check back here in late June for a review of Okja.
