Fan films have come a long way in the last 15 years, and a few even have the polish of a mid-budget feature-film production. For example, this Metroid fan film subtitled The Sky Calls is pretty great for what it is. Directed by Sam Balcomb, the 11-minute short features Nerdist’s Jessica Chobot as Samus Aran and lots of simulated film grain.

As Ethan Anderton at /Film notes, Metroid: The Sky Calls has some of the look and feel of Ridley Scott’s Alien as well as touches of 2001: A Space Odyssey. There’s also a hint of Iron Man whenever we see Samus’ reaction shots inside her power suit.
Now that Nintendo is open to making movies out of their IPs, I wonder if they’d try to strike a similar tone with a feature adaptation of Metroid. (We have some of our own ideas on what Nintendo movies should get made and who should make them.)
