Putting on his dirtiest hat and donning his best non-inebriated Jackson Maine voice, Shia LaBeouf returns to the big screen in a modern day version of a Mark Twain story. A small town outlaw on the run, LaBeouf’s Tyler crosses path with Zak (played by Zack Gottsagen), an outlaw in his own right in search of becoming a professional wrestler while his caretaker (Dakota Johnson) tracks the duo. As the trailer unfolds, an unexpected kinship forms aboard raft befitting Huck Finn himself.
A fan favorite at SXSW earlier this year, The Peanut Butter Falcon took home an Audience Award during the festival’s closing ceremonies. While it didn’t win any jury awards, the esteemed proclamation from viewers might hold more weight across a larger scope. General consideration rarely reflects hard-nosed critiques.
LaBeouf has kept himself busy, potentially appearing in three movies throughout the course of this year with Falcon, Honey Boy (slated for a November release), and The Tax Collector, helmed by David Ayer currently in post-production. Are we about to see a LaBeouf resurgence? Time will tell, and perhaps Falcon will kick things off.
The Peanut Butter Falcon hits theaters on August 9th.
