The low budget horror of the 70’s and 80’s host some of the most formative movies of my young life. Whether it be Girly, The Baby, or the assorted works of Jean Rollin, I’ve been transfixed by these grungy works of the explicit and bizarre since I was a teenager, and even films that label themselves as throwbacks to this much lauded era of macabre mutilation easily garner my attention.
With that in mind, I bring you the trailer for Weird Fiction, which though it shows little in the way of spectacle at least captures some of that low-res grindhouse vibe. Written and directed by Jacob Perrett, the anthology will see a group of teens searching for a missing body, a baby sitter stalked by some malevolent entity, a porn star with a mysterious bite on his neck, and two girls who uncover something that may very well end the world.
If the trailer doesn’t do it for you, I think we can all at least agree that the poster (viewable below) has all the retro charm you could ask for. I can just see it on some battered VHS box in the back of brick-and-mortar movie store. Nostalgia, even for decades I was never alive to see, can be a powerful thing.
Weird Fiction will hit DVD and VOD on May 12, 2020.
