Weird Science getting an edgy remake because reasons

Universal, working with Joel Silver (who produced the original) with a script by Michael Bacall (who wrote the scripts for Project X and 21 Jump Street), is setting out to remake one of the John Hughes saga of badass 80’s flicks, Weird Science.

For some reason (it’s to separate itself from the original but whatever), it’s setting out to skew edgier a la 21 Jump Street. While an R rating, isn’t set in stone, that’s probably the direction the new film is going. So what does everyone think? I’m a little concerned, but I’m willing to let most of this slide since it’s not one of the triad which shouldn’t be touched (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles). Somehow, Weird Science seems the most adaptably modern out of the Hughes films. It’s a story of two awkward males who manage to create a “perfect woman” who teaches them to not be nerds. All a current version of this would need to do to succeed is to cast two relatively unknown young comedians at its center (like Superbad) and just get any pretty face to play the center female. This could be HUGE.

Besides, it’s in the hands of a good writer. As Matt mentioned, 21 Jump Street was initially a weird announcement but it turned out to be one of the best comedies last year. Let’s just see how this plays out.
