Werner Herzog is planning his next two documentary features, and the subject matter is, as you’d expect, distinctly varied. On the one side, Herzog would like to do an IMAX film about active volcanoes, a collaboration with Cambridge University professor/volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer. On the other side, there is also a documentary about the fashion photographer Helmut Newton.
While Herzog prepares these projects, the last part of his On Death Row television documentaries will be airing this month on Investigation Discovery. Each of these hour-long episodes focuses on a single death row inmate. I’ve unfortunately missed the show all month, but hope to catch up with it in the near future. The series was an outgrowth of Herzog’s acclaimed feature-length documentary Into the Abyss.
The article from The Film Stage also reminds us that Herzog will be playing the villain in One Shot from Christopher McQuarrie (Way of the Gun), opposite Tom Cruise. I’ve never read the Lee Child book (or any of Lee Child’s thrillers, actually), but I hope Herzog looks like a Bond villain, or maybe just Klaus Kinski with a cannon for one hand and an anchor for the other.
