While a rumor that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (Magneto’s son and daughter, which means that mutants would exist within the Whedonverse) were joining the Avengers for UMAS: 2015 has been floating around the Internet for sometime, Joss Whedon has finally confirmed their appearance just a few days ago.
In an interview with IGN, Joss Whedon had a few things to say about they’re inclusion:
You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.
Once again, this is a huge deal if Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver keep their comic book origins. Scarlet Witch is a godlike mutant with the power to bend reality (and once erased the existence of mutants all together) while Quicksilver is a guy who runs fast. Although Fox technically owns the rights to various mutants, Marvel owns these two characters (since they’ve been a part of The Avengers comic book line up for some time). Will it prove a shake up for comic book movies entirely, as their existence hints at the greater mutant population? Maybe. Does this mean a whole lot other than UMAS: 2015 being super cool? Not really. We’ll just have to see what Whedon cooks up. In Whedon We Trust, as they say.
