Whedon turned down Buffy reboot

Every corner of internet geekdom was in uproar at the recent news that producers Rubel and Kazel Kuzui were officially pushing ahead with a planned cinematic reboot of Joss Whedon’s beloved TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Whedon’s response to the news was dismissive and typically jovial, ending with the line: “Leave me with my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.”

As it turns out, Hollywood Reporter are saying that Whedon was already well aware of the project because he had been offered the chance to work on it, but chose to take on The Avengers instead. The story is corroborated by an Entertainment Weekly online interview from 2009, shortly before the airing of Dollhouse‘s second season and after the Buffy reboot project had been announced as in development. Whedon mentions off-hand that the producers approached his agent, but that his feeling was to leave it alone.

Whedon’s decision not to return to the Buffy well is understandable, especially after his falling out with the Kuzui’s over their doctoring of his script for the original, dreadful Buffymovie starring Kristy Swanson.
