If you couldn’t tell by our recent coverage of Django Unchained, we here at Flixist are very excited about Tarantino’s next movie. Since the script is starting to make its rounds around town, right about now we should be hearing about casting rumors. And sure enough, The Hollywood Reporter doesn’t disappoint! However, the casting of Django is a bit of a surprise. At least to me.
Currently in talks for the lead role of Django is Will Smith. However, no offer has been made for the floppy eared actor. Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson have also in talks to play big roles in the western.
We also have a brief plot description of the movie. Django, an escaped slave hoping to reunite with his wife, teams up with a bounty hunter (Waltz) to take down an evil plantation owner, and his manipulative house slave (Jackson). Sounds pretty badass to me.
If Will Smith were to take this role, it’d be a pretty different role for him, coming off big mainstream successes like Hitch, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Hancock. The film apparently has fairly liberal use of a certain racial slur, and most likely will have heaps of ridiculous violence. But I don’t think Smith would turn down an offer to work with one of the modern masters.
