In an interview with Drew McWeeny from Hitfix, Darren Aronofsky has revealed a few key points of interest from his upcoming Wolverine movie. First, the film has a title: The Wolverine. In addition, he has wisely made the decision to divorce his film from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, referring to his movie as a “one-off.â€
I love the idea of taking the film out of the established and generally stupid continuity of X-Men Origins, so I think this is a pretty smart move. It can allow Aronofsky and Christopher McQuarrie to make whatever Wolverine movie they want to make, rather than get it saddled down with continuity. As much as I love Marvel’s current strategy of a cohesive film universe, that doesn’t mean that, as in comics, there’s not room for an out of continuity one-shot. On top of that, it gives them the chance to actually explore Wolverine’s character, rather than a never-ending cavalcade of, “Hey kids! Check out all these mutants! And there’s Cyclops! How many action figures can we put you down for?â€
That said, I’m not crazy about the title, but I’ll live.
