X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants pushed back by Fox

We don’t blame you if you’ve totally forgotten about the upcoming X-Men films. With Marvel Studios dominating the field with the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, and Fox’s own Deadpool 2 upstaging its parent franchise, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants feel like afterthoughts. It isn’t helping that a series of release date shifts from 20th Century Fox (soon to be eaten whole by Disney) is pushing these two mutant films back.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the follow-up to First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, was originally set for a Nov. 2, 2018 release date and moved to Feb. 14, 2019. Get your future Valentine’s Day plans ready. Meanwhile, The New Mutants, which will have a horror twist to it, is now releasing in Aug. 2, 2019. This is a move from Feb. 22, 2019, which itself was a delay from April 13 of this year. The film from Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is reportedly adding a new character in reshoots.

With Fox’s version of the X-Men looking like it’s on the ropes with an impending Disney acquisition and an absorption by Marvel Studios to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s looking like these non-Deadpool movies are throwaways by the studio. Of course, more time could improve these film projects, and comic book fans would likely love to have their doubts proven wrong.
