That Yogi Bear film looks pretty awful, huh? I don’t think there’s any need for this to be made, unless you subscribe to the “Hollywood has run out of ideas and can only repurpose older ideas” school of thought. I certainly couldn’t blame you, after seeing this greenlit.
But there’s one way this potential atrocity could be salvaged, at least a little bit. The Film Stage noticed that the film’s director Eric Brevig has prepared an alternate ending to the film with the help of the actual animators. In this ending, Boo-Boo shoots Yogi in the head in a tribute to the titular scen of Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. There are lots of grim, resolute expressions and some sad music as the scene hits all the important bits. And then? Happy music.
For any parent who is forced to take their kids to the film, this scene might be cathartic enough to raise their spirits. Of course, finding a theater with the balls to put this ending on the big screen is probably going to be pretty difficult. Watch the original scene here.
EDIT: Turns out this was made by animator Edmund Earle, according to Speakeasy. Still a great parody!
