Fans of The Kinks rejoice: a biopic about the band is finally underway. Titled You Really Got Me, the film will be directed by the extremely capable Julien Temple. Script duties are with Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, the same duo who wrote The Commitments along with novelist Roddy Doyle (the film was an adaptation of Doyle’s novel of the same name). You Really Got Me will focus on the band’s rise to fame as well as the troubled relationship between brothers/bandmates Ray Davies and Dave Davies (i.e., they f***ing despise each other).
Temple has many rock movie bonafides under his belt: the Sex Pistols doc The Filth and the Fury, the Joe Strummer doc Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten, and Glastonbury, the doc about the Glastonbury Festival. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized he also directed Earth Girls Are Easy and the ambitious rock musical Absolute Beginners featuring David Bowie.
You Really Got Me was first announced back in 2009. In 2010 and 2011, Temple directed two BBC documentaries about Ray Davies and Dave Davies, respectively. Still no word on casting for the feature film. Full disclosure: I’m listening to Kinda Kinks while I type this.
