The latest trailer for Ari Aster’s Midsommar gives us a decidedly tongue-in-cheek look at the coming festival of beauty and misery. There’s such gorgeous color and symmetry here as revelers even sit at symbolically-placed tables to eat dinner. There’s not much footage we haven’t seen previously, but this one does a better job of selling the movie for me than the last trailer. Maybe because there’s less talking.
One thing does bother me, however, and it’s the treatment of that poor bear just hanging out in a tiny cage. All that lush green around him, and all he can do is sit slumped over. Hopefully he’ll get to break free and kill a couple of the cultists before returning triumphantly to mother nature.
Midsommar is getting a lot of good buzz so far, so I’m hoping this will be something both as special as Hereditary and The Wicker Man when it releases on its fast-approaching date of July 3, 2019.
